How target file size compression works
For JPG and WebP, BrightTools encodes several quality levels and uses a bounded binary search to find the highest quality that fits. If quality alone is not enough, it gradually scales the image down and searches again. PNG is encoded losslessly and may be resized, but transparency and the PNG format are preserved.
Supported image formats
JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP files are supported. AVIF is intentionally not advertised because decoding support varies between browsers.
Are images uploaded?
No. Files are read as local browser objects and processed with the Canvas API. Names, pixels, EXIF and output blobs are not sent to analytics or any third party.
JPG, PNG and WebP
JPG is a broadly compatible lossy format for photographs. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, making it useful for graphics and logos. WebP often produces smaller files while supporting transparency, but older software may not open it.
Why an image may not reach the requested size
Images stay on your device. PNG compression cannot use a quality slider, so very detailed or transparent PNGs may not reach extremely small targets.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. Decoding, resizing and encoding happen in your browser. Files, names and metadata are never sent to BrightTools.
Can I compress multiple images?
Yes. Select or drop multiple files, review the queue, then use Compress All. Processing is sequential to keep mobile browsers responsive.
Can I compress an image below 200KB?
Choose a smaller target such as 100 KB. The tool searches quality and then reduces dimensions when necessary.
Does compression reduce image quality?
Lower JPEG and WebP sizes require lower quality or dimensions. The tool chooses the highest quality that fits your target and never silently replaces an image with a larger file.
Why can’t a PNG reach the target size?
PNG is lossless and its size depends on image detail. We preserve the format and transparency and explain when the target is not realistic.
Can I download all images as a ZIP?
Yes. After successful processing, Download All as ZIP creates the archive entirely in your browser.
