How to resize an image

Choose JPG, PNG or WebP images, then select a resize mode. Pixel dimensions are useful when a platform gives you an exact requirement; percentage scaling is convenient for a whole batch; longest-edge scaling keeps mixed portrait and landscape images proportional. The tool previews the expected dimensions before you process.

Resize by pixels or percentage

In pixel mode, turn on Lock aspect ratio to calculate the other side automatically. Percentage mode offers quick 25%, 50%, 75%, 150% and 200% choices, plus a custom value. Longest-edge mode scales the larger side and preserves the original ratio. Upscaling is off by default, so a small source is not silently enlarged.

Use common image size presets

Presets cover avatars (512×512), square posts (1080×1080), portrait posts (1080×1350), Stories (1080×1920), YouTube thumbnails (1280×720) and Open Graph images (1200×630). Fit keeps every pixel, Fill covers the frame with a centre crop, and Stretch uses the exact dimensions with a clear distortion warning. Fit mode can use transparency, white, black or a custom background for the empty area.

Image resizing vs. image compression

Resizing changes the number of pixels and therefore the display dimensions. Compression changes how those pixels are encoded and usually targets a smaller file size. You can resize first and then use the BrightTools image compressor when a platform has both dimension and file-size limits.

Common image size use cases

Use square presets for avatars and profile photos, portrait dimensions for social posts, 1080×1920 for Stories, 1280×720 for video thumbnails and 1200×630 for link previews. Check the destination service because its limits can change.

Private, local image processing

Your images are processed locally in your browser and are never uploaded. Decoding, EXIF orientation handling, Canvas rendering, encoding and ZIP creation all happen on this device. File names and image pixels are not sent to analytics.

Good to know

Resizing changes pixel dimensions, while compression mainly changes encoding and file size. Enlarging cannot restore missing detail. Animated images are intentionally rejected; use a still frame instead.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Images are decoded, resized, encoded and zipped locally with browser APIs. Files, names, pixels and EXIF data are not sent to BrightTools or analytics.

Can I resize multiple images at once?

Yes. Select or drop multiple JPG, PNG or WebP images. Each file is processed independently, so one failure does not stop the queue.

What is the difference between fit, fill and stretch?

Fit keeps the whole image and may leave empty space, fill covers the target and crops from the centre, and stretch uses the exact width and height but may distort the image.

Why is my small image not getting larger?

Upscaling is off by default because it cannot add real detail. Turn on Allow enlarging small images when a larger pixel size is required.

Does JPG keep transparent backgrounds?

JPG has no transparency channel. Transparent areas are composited onto white or the background color you choose; PNG and WebP can keep transparency.

Does the tool preserve photo orientation?

Yes. JPEG EXIF orientation is read locally and pixels are rendered upright before resizing. The exported image is a newly encoded file without the original EXIF payload.

Can I download all resized images as a ZIP?

Yes. The ZIP is generated entirely in your browser and includes successful results only.
