How to use

  1. Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP images into the tool.
  2. Choose Remove Background and wait while the versioned local model runs in your browser.

How to remove an image background

Add a JPG, PNG or WebP, then choose Remove Background. The local matte engine creates a soft per-pixel mask and maps it back to the original resolution before export.

How local AI background removal works

The model manifest is downloaded from BrightTools to your browser on first use. Processing runs in a Web Worker, with WebGPU preferred and a WASM compatible fallback. Your image pixels are never sent to the model server or to analytics.

How to create a transparent PNG

Keep Transparent background selected and download the PNG result. The checkerboard is only a preview; the downloaded file contains a real alpha channel.

How to refine hair and object edges

Use the Feather, Threshold, Smooth edge and Expand/contract controls for small edge changes. Use Erase to remove leftover background and Restore to bring back a missing part of the subject. Inspect the result on both white and black previews.

How to replace an image background

Select Solid color or Custom image. A custom background is loaded locally and composited below the foreground. JPG output is flattened, while PNG and WebP can keep transparency when Transparent is selected.

Are images uploaded?

No. Files, pixels, masks, background images and edit history stay in this browser. Only an anonymous tool event may be recorded, without file names or image data.

Why background removal may be imperfect

Low contrast, reflections, transparent objects and complex hair can be difficult for any automatic matte. Manual repair is provided so you can review the edge before publishing.

WebGPU and browser compatibility

Modern browsers use WebGPU when available. Browsers without WebGPU use a WASM compatible worker path, so the tool remains usable on more devices. Large images may require more memory.

Good to know

Automatic mattes can need review around fine hair, reflections, transparent objects or low-contrast backgrounds. The tool keeps the original pixels and provides manual mask repair; it does not promise perfect results for every image.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Images, masks and custom backgrounds are decoded, processed and encoded in your browser. They are not sent to BrightTools or a third-party cutout API.

Does background removal work locally?

Yes. The versioned model manifest is downloaded to your browser on first use, then a Web Worker performs the local matte calculation.

Can I remove backgrounds from multiple images?

Yes. Add multiple images and use Remove All Backgrounds. The queue uses one task on touch devices and up to two on desktop.

How do I fix missing or incorrectly removed areas?

Choose Erase or Restore, set brush size, hardness and opacity, then paint over the result. Undo and redo only store mask edits.

Can I download a transparent PNG?

Yes. Transparent is the default background and the output receives a real alpha channel. The checkerboard is only a preview.

Why does the AI model need to download?

The model and its runtime must be available in the browser for local processing. It is fetched from a same-origin, versioned BrightTools path and can be cached by the browser.

Does the tool work without WebGPU?

Yes. It detects WebGPU and falls back to a WASM-compatible worker path when WebGPU is unavailable.

Can I replace the background with another image?

Yes. Load a local background image, then choose Custom image. The foreground remains above it and the background never leaves your device.

Why are hair edges difficult to remove perfectly?

Fine hair mixes foreground and background colours at the pixel level. Inspecting on white and black backgrounds and using Feather, Erase and Restore gives you control over the final edge.
