How to rotate or flip an image
Choose one or more images, then use the per-image controls for a 90° turn, 180° turn, custom angle or mirror flip. The preview reflects the exact transform that will be exported.
Rotate images vs. flip images
Rotation turns an image around its centre and can change the output width and height. Flipping mirrors the image across a horizontal or vertical axis without changing its dimensions. You can combine both operations.
Why phone photos can look sideways
Phone cameras often save a JPEG Orientation tag in EXIF metadata instead of rotating the pixel data. BrightTools reads that tag locally and normalizes the image before applying edits, so the original camera direction is not applied twice.
Expanded canvas and crop mode
Expanded canvas is the default for custom angles: it calculates a bounding box so corners are not clipped. PNG and WebP leave new areas transparent, while JPG uses white or the background color you choose. Crop mode keeps the original dimensions and clips overflow.
JPG, PNG and WebP output
JPG is broadly compatible and uses a quality setting with a 92% default. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so it has no meaningful quality slider. WebP supports transparency and uses a 90% default quality.
Private browser processing
Decoding, EXIF handling, Canvas transforms, encoding and ZIP creation happen on this device. No image upload endpoint is called, and the original files are never overwritten.
Good to know
Rotation and export re-encode the image with Canvas, so JPG and WebP quality depends on the selected setting. AVIF and HEIC input are available only when the browser can decode them locally. Animated images and files over the browser safety limits are rejected.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Files are decoded, transformed, encoded and zipped locally in your browser. File names, pixels, EXIF data and Blob URLs are not sent to analytics.
Can I rotate multiple images at once?
Yes. Add multiple JPG, PNG or WebP files, set each image independently or use the batch action bar, then process all images in a controlled local queue.
Can I flip an image horizontally or vertically?
Yes. Horizontal and vertical flips can be used separately or together, and the preview uses the same transform as the exported file.
Will rotating reduce image quality?
The image is re-encoded when exported. PNG remains lossless, while JPG and WebP use the quality value you choose; the tool does not claim lossless rotation.
Why does my phone photo have the wrong orientation?
Many phones store the camera direction in JPEG EXIF Orientation instead of rotating pixels. BrightTools reads that tag locally and normalizes the pixels before applying your edits.
Which image formats are supported?
JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP are supported. AVIF and HEIC are also accepted when the browser provides a local decoder. Animated files and formats without a decoder are rejected with a clear message.
Can I rotate an image by a custom angle?
Yes. Use the slider or number field from −180° to 180°. Expanded canvas is the default so the rotated content is not clipped.
