How this sleep calculator works

Choose a target wake-up time to work backwards, or start with a bedtime to work forwards. The calculator treats your date, clock time and IANA time zone as an explicit local date-time, then performs arithmetic on the resulting instant. Each card separates estimated sleep time from time in bed, so a cycle multiple is never presented as a guarantee of sufficient rest.

Bedtime and wake-up calculations

For a wake-up target, estimated sleep onset is wake-up time minus the selected number of cycles. Suggested bedtime is another fall-asleep buffer earlier. For a bedtime, the buffer is added once; when you choose “estimated actual sleep time”, it is not added again. Dates remain visible so plans crossing midnight, a new month or a new year are unambiguous.

Cycle estimates versus sleep-duration guidance

Ninety minutes is a convenient planning value, not a fixed biological rule. The advanced settings allow 80–110 minutes in five-minute steps. NIH describes typical cycles as roughly 80–100 minutes, but people and individual nights vary. The age selector independently compares total estimated sleep with general guidance: 6–12 years 9–12 hours, 13–17 years 8–10, adults 18–60 at least 7, 61–64 years 7–9, and 65+ years 7–8. Children and teens may need more sleep; these ranges are not personal medical prescriptions. Infant sleep is not calculated here because infant sleep needs and safety guidance require age-specific professional advice.

Why the first sleep window is shown

The first-sleep-window card shows an approximate 90-minute window after estimated sleep onset. It reflects the idea, discussed by Seiji Nishino in The Stanford Method for Ultimate Sound Sleep, that protecting the earliest part of sleep can be useful. This is an original summary and a planning reference only: the browser cannot tell whether you entered deep sleep, the window cannot compensate for severe sleep restriction, and actual stages differ between people.

Sleep debt and practical bedtime habits

Long-term short sleep can accumulate as sleep debt, and extra weekend sleep cannot guarantee that it is fully reversed. Keep sleep and wake times reasonably regular, reduce bright light and stimulating activity before bed, allow a sensible buffer, and keep the room quiet, dark and comfortable. Do not shorten total sleep just to make a cycle multiple. Persistent insomnia, frequent awakenings, loud snoring, breathing pauses or daytime sleepiness deserve professional medical advice; this page is not a treatment plan.

How many sleep cycles do I need?

Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep, which may be around five cycles at a 90-minute estimate. Total sleep duration matters more than mechanically matching a multiple.

Is 6 hours of sleep enough?

Six hours is below the usual recommendation for most adults. A complete estimated cycle does not make a short night sufficient; consider the duration label and protect enough time for sleep.
